Optimizing Recoil Reduction: The Science Behind Ultradyne Muzzle Brakes

Recoil reduction was the main performance parameter we aimed to optimize in our muzzle brakes, leading us to design and construct our innovative “load cell” for accurate data recording.

Many existing methods of comparing recoil reduction have variables that impact accuracy. To achieve precise scientific conclusions, we established key design parameters for our testing method:

  1. Static System: Ensuring no force was displaced by system movement under recoil. A static system around the gun measuring linear force is the most accurate way to consistently get recoil measurements, avoiding friction fluctuations found in other setups like sleds or pendulums.
  2. Controlled Trigger Pull: The trigger pull needed to be consistent every time. Any variation in pressure or torque could skew force results.
  3. Velocity Normalization: Recoil results often vary due to differences in shot velocity. We recorded velocities with a chronograph and used them as a scalar in our force equations.
  4. Eliminating Semi-Automatic Cycling: A semi-automatic system cycling the spent cartridge alters the true recoil measurement. Using an adjustable gas block to stop the semiautomatic cycling process ensures consistent gas expulsion from the muzzle.

These parameters guided us to our load cell design. The setup includes a metal frame to keep the system static and a trigger pull mechanism with a lever and bowden cable for consistent actuation. A piezoelectric sensor in the rear rest measures the electric charge in response to mechanical stress, converting data points to force readings at a rate of 10,000 samples per second. This data is then output onto a graph to analyze recoil and observe changes.

The graphs provide peak recoil force and recoil impulse, factoring in the duration of the felt recoil. The best muzzle brake design minimizes these results, offering the lowest felt recoil to the user.

Our extensive research and design efforts have resulted in Ultradyne muzzle brakes optimized for the best shooter experience. We offer a diverse line of brakes tailored to various needs, including recoil reduction, noise level, muzzle rise mitigation, length, and weight, ensuring the perfect fit for any shooter.
